About Project
SATREPS stands for Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development. The project is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). SATREPS is a 5-year project starting from April 2016 to March 2021 and has a satellite office located in Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC). The main institutions of the projects are: (1) Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, and (2) Institute of Technology of Cambodia, Cambodia.
The project aims to develop a water environment analytical tool for Tonle Sap Lake (TSL) and establish an environmental conservation platform through the elucidation of the lake and the tool development.
The long-term project objectives (for the next 10 years, until 2025) are as follows:
- To establish state-of-the-art research-oriented structures and facilities in ITC
- To promote science-based management to the government of Cambodia
- To develop the Tonle Sap Water Environmental Platform (TSWEP) and make it one of the benchmarks in freshwater ecology and management studies in Southeast Asia
Study Area
Tonle Sap Lake in General
• Location: 12°53′N 104°04′E
• Tonle Sap Great Lake, in central Cambodia, is the largest natural lake in southeast Asia
• The size of the lake varies seasonally, expanding from in the dry 2,5000 km2 season to 15,000 km2 in the wet season.
