Ceramic Lab

Location: Building H, Room number: H-303

Description about lab:
The Ceramic Laboratory was established with the support of the Higher Education Improvement Project (HEIP) to facilitate the research and teaching activities for the program of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at ITC. Under a sub-project entitled “Development and optimization of ceramic tile using Cambodian clays incorporating with industrial wastes”, the initial purpose of the creation of the laboratory is to support research activities of the sub-project to achieve the following objectives:
1. To characterize the physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties of raw materials such as clay, rock dust, and silica sand.
2. To understand the ceramic behaviors of each clay and the mixture (clay and rock dust) in various firing temperatures
3. To optimize the mixture composition of ceramic roof tile from domestic clay incorporating different sources of rock dust using design of experiments (DOE).
4. To improve university-industry linkage by supporting the private sector in producing better technology by using domestic alternative resources.

Research areas:
● Characterization of raw materials on plasticity, particle size, chemical and mineralogy
● Formulation of ceramic bodies for various applications e.g., building materials, tableware, and drinkware.
● Enhancement properties of the ceramic product with the ability to produce ceramic prototypes with different sizes (processing)
● Ceramic properties testing: water absorption, porosity, strength, microstructure.

Services:
● Check the quality of raw materials, especially clay
● Formulate the composition of ceramic bodies for a specific application
● Check the quality of the ceramic products
● Conduct and expand research collaborations with the target industries.
